Australia is the second-highest consumer of textiles per person in the world, after the United States of America.
This World Environment Day, Dress for Dignity is encouraging Australians to say YES to clothes and NO to landfill by joining Australia’s Biggest Closet Cleanout between June 4 and June 5.
Not only will it be good for the planet, but all proceeds from the sale will go to Australian charity, Share the Dignity to continue their work supporting those experiencing period poverty, homelessness, and domestic violence.
Dress for Dignity is Australia’s first 100% charitable fashion marketplace where people can upload and sell or purchase pre-loved, quality fashion items.
After hearing the Australian Government’s report that Australia generates and sends approximately 800,000 tonnes of textiles waste to landfill each year, Dress for Dignity hoped to create a more sustainable circular fashion economy in Australia.
The idea for Dress for Dignity was sparked whilst our founder was cleaning out her closet during COVID.
The Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Water, and The Environment released a communique at the National Clothing Textile Waste Roundtable in May 2021 that found Australians created enough textile landfill waste to cover Tasmania annually.
Each Australian consumes an average of 27 kilograms of new clothing per year and disposes an average 23 kilograms of clothing to landfill each year. That's enough waste to cover the whole of Tasmania.
