Dress for Dignity’s Biggest Closet Clean Out
Clean out your closet for a good cause this World Environment Day
Dress for Dignity, a charitable pre-loved fashion marketplace by Share the Dignity, is calling on Australians to clean out their closet for a good cause in the lead-up to World Environment Day (June 5).
From June 2 to June 4 Dress for Dignity will be hosting its virtual Biggest Closet Clean Out with a goal to have 1,000 more items listed on the platform.
The eco-friendly initiative was launched in 2022 with an aim to increase the impact of Share the Dignity’s work.
The theme this World Environment Day is ‘solutions to plastic pollution’ and by joining the movement and listing items you can play your part in keeping quality clothes out of landfill and instead, extend the life of fashion items by keeping it circular.
The fashion industry has a huge impact on the environment with a 2022 report by the Australian Fashion Council finding Australians buy 14.8kg of clothing each year. This makes Australia one of the largest textile consumers per capita.
On the flip side, Australian consumers let 10kg of clothing go to landfill each year.
Supporting initiatives like Dress for Dignity is a key way to make a positive impact on the environment with 2021 research showing Australian charitable initiatives which sell pre-loved clothes are keeping clothes out of landfill with 12.1kg of clothing donated per person per year.
Share the Dignity/Dress for Dignity founder and managing director Rochelle Courtenay said it was such an easy way to make an impact, not only on the environment but on the lives of other women, girls, and people with a period.
“Cleaning out your closet has never been more impactful, it will ensure more clothes stay out of landfill while all the proceeds help Share the Dignity’s mission to ensure menstrual equity for all,” Ms Courtenay said.
“All it takes is one dress to make a difference, and as uploading a dress takes seconds, it is such an easy way to help the women, girls and people with a period Share the Dignity supports.”
When listing your items on Dress for Dignity you can choose to keep up to 80 percent of the funds and donate the remainder or all to Share the Dignity to continue their mission of ensuring that everyone in life is afforded the dignity that so many of us take for granted.
All the funds raised help provide bags filled with essential items to women, girls and those who menstruate and are experiencing or at risk of domestic violence, homelessness, or poverty.
